Green Spring Cleaning

Winter is coming to an end and all those spring activities you are looking forward to are almost here! Don’t skip out on spring cleaning though! During the cold months in the winter we tend to not clean as much, which results in items gathering more dust. Some items in your home may have even been forgotten. So, open the windows and let the relaxing smell of spring into your home while you get your spring cleaning out of the way.

Making a list of what needs to be cleaned can help to ensure that none of the nooks or crannies in your home are missed. After you have put together your list of what and where needs to be cleaned, it is a good idea to take a look under the sink or in the closet to see what type cleaning products  you have on hand.  This is also a great time to consider whether or not the products that you are using are the best options for your health or the environment.

Many household cleaning products can be dangerous to your health and harmful to the environment. Choosing to clean with green products allows you to not only prevent possible harm at home, but also reduce potentially harmful effects on Mother Nature. Cleaning with green products is also a great way to save money, especially if you make your own homemade cleaning products! To begin your spring cleaning green-style, here are some steps that you should take.

Go green this spring with these cleaning products instead:

  • Glass Cleaner:

For a simple glass cleaner just mix ¼ cup of vinegar with 1 quart of water in a spray bottle. This is a great go green approach then other products and could save you money!

  • Floor Cleaner:

Mix 4 cups of white distilled vinegar with a gallon of hot water. You can also add a few drops of a scent such as lemon or a floral scent to leave your house smelling amazing!  Adding just a few drops of scent will get rid of the vinegar smell.

  • Drain Cleaner:

Pour half a cup of baking soda down the sink and then add about     a cup of vinegar. Cover the drain and wait a few minutes, then finish cleaning by applying boiling water and salt. Be very careful when pouring the boiling water!

  • Air freshener:

For a simple air freshener that will leave your house smell amazing, just apply an essential oil onto a cotton ball. Yes, it’s that simple! Make sure the cotton ball is out of reach for small children though.
