Repurpose and upcycle items | Papillion Sanitation
Upcycling is a popular trend that seems to be taking the online world by storm. Whether you are browsing Facebook, searching Pinterest, or keeping up with your favorite blogs, upcycling seems to be making appearances everywhere! Upcycling is essentially the art of repurposing items that are either old, worn out, or no longer used and turning them into something with a new purpose. Let’s face it, we all have “things” laying around the house that are just taking up space, but with a little helpful inspiration you can be on your way to upcycling in no time.
Why repurpose or upcycle? When you repurpose or upcycle an item you make the item useful again, and prevent it from ending up in the landfill. Upcycling is not only good for the environment, but can also be good for your pocketbook. There are countless upcycling ideas and repurposing projects to be found online ranging from repurposed flower planters to vintage home décor, and most can be done with little to no cost depending on what you have lying around the house.
Upcycling and repurposing is an enjoyable activity that can be done on your own, with friends, or as a family. So, how can you get started on repurposing or upcycling your items? Just get creative! Here are just a few repurposing and upcycling activities that we have come across that may help you get started:
- Trash can into a jewelry holder- This project is very simple, all you have to do for this repurpose activity is to find a trash can that have small holes. Usually metal trash cans with a checkered pattern work great for this activity. You can spray paint the trash can and add decoration, that’s it now you have a new organized jewelry holder.
- Recycle Pringle cans- This is a simple activity to do during the holidays. Keep your old Pringle cans and simply decorate them and put some cookies in the containers.
- Coffee creamers into water bottles/dressing containers- For this activity just remove the label to the coffee creamer then add either water or your dressing. It’s as simple as that and now you have a new water bottle or a container for your salad dressings. You could also use these containers to store toys that are small and make your own personalized labels.
- Reuse a tic-tac box for bobby pins- Recycle your bobby pin box and put bobby pins in the container. This would be great to store in your purse or when you are on the go. The bobby pins are now easy to find.
Projects like this can be fun for the whole family. Your children will begin to understand how important recycling is and how an item can be reused. When you reuse items around your house you can also eliminate the need to purchase new items.
