How To Recycle Shredded Paper

We often get the question: Can I recycle shredded paper?  The answer is yes, but it does require proper preparation.  Shredded paper is difficult to recycle because it can jam sorting equipment at recycling facilities, and if dumped loose in your cart, it can contaminate other recyclables, blow around if the lid of the cart is open, or make a mess in your cart if it gets wet.

Following proper preparation guidelines can help prevent these issues and make it easier for facilities to process your shredded paper responsibly.

  1. Place shredded paper in a paper bag or a clear plastic bag.  Never place loose shredded paper in your cart.
  2. If using a paper bag, label it as “Shredded Paper” so workers at the recycling facility can identify the bag and ensure it goes into the correct machinery.
  3. Only shred sensitive documents like tax records or medical files. Recycle non-sensitive papers whole.

You can also keep your eye out for local free shredding options.  Banks or credit unions occasionally hold free shredding events, as does AARP or the Better Business Bureau.
